- its surroundings

Lovely WensleydaleHelm is situated in Wensleydale in the Heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park - an area of outstanding natural beauty and an inspiration to artists and writers throughout the centuries.  In recent years the area has become known worldwide as "Herriot Country" through the success of the famous "All Creatures Great and Small" television series. The best way to enjoy the dales is to get out and about - by car, bus, bike and especially on foot. It is quite possible to walk for hours in the wonderful, fresh Yorkshire air without seeing another soul!

Bolton Castle North Yorkshire is rich in history, so there are castles, abbeys, museums and stately homes to satisfy the most voracious cultural appetite!
Add to these the many fascinating craft workshops, galleries, gardens, musical events, markets, antique shops and auction houses and you will never be stuck for something to keep you amused.

And when in Wensleydale, a must to visit is the Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre, where you can find out all about the history - and watch the present day making - of Real Wensleydale Cheese.
Don't miss the free tastings in the cheese shop!

Ooh, Gromit!

Bainbridge greenThe Yorkshire Dales are scattered with charming, sleepy villages and bustling market towns linked by winding, undulating roads lined with drystone walls and an abundance of wild flowers; where the only traffic jam you'll encounter will be a flock of lazy sheep or perhaps a herd of cows being led to the milking parlour. This picture shows the village green at Bainbridge. Helm is perched high on the hillside in the background - just out of sight behind the branches!
