This is the earliest known picture of Hawes Amateur Operatic Society.

It shows the Society's first performance - "Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan, staged in 1925.

The photograph has been kindly supplied by Mr. M. Harker of Masham, whose aunt, Miss Esther Harker produced and took part in the operas.
It is believed to have been taken by Dr. M.E. Howarth.

The Society, in this form, continued its productions until 1938.

Shows include: 1925 The Pirates of Penzance, 1926 The Mikado, 1927 Iolanthe, 1928 The Gondoliers, 1929 The Yeomen of the Guard, 1930 The Pirates of Penzance, 1931 Ruddigore, 1932 Patience, 1933 Tom Jones, 1934 Dorothy, 1935 The Mikado, 1936 Rebel Maid, 1937 The Student Prince, 1937 Lilac Time, 1938 Merrie England

Over the years, in addition to the major annual shows, there have been several pantomimes and other Christmas shows (the production of which was sometimes undertaken by those mentioned below).
Some of the more recent productions include:
1992 The Witch that Nicked Christmas, 1994 The Wizard of Oz, 1997 Once Upon a Time, 2000 The Sleeping Beauty, 2001 Sinbad the Sailor, 2002 Jack and the Beanstalk

From 1979 the Society has benefitted enormously from the expert musical direction of Stan Roocroft. From about the same time Sue Iveson contributed greatly in the role of choreographer , while Roger Bush provided perfect piano accompaniment.

In 1998 HAOS staged an original production: "The Shamrock and the Rose", written by Alan Harpley, one of its members.

The Society has had among its producers: Sidney Mason, Wendy Nevill, Barbara Roocroft, Norma Jones, Colin Bailey. Sue Harpley has, since 1989, applied her creative skills as stage manager. To all those mentioned above and to all the unsung heroes who have tirelessly given their time either on stage or behind the scenes, HAOS is extremely grateful.

It is hoped that we shall eventually find time to produce a full history of the Society on these pages. Watch this space!!!
